"The Other Wise Man" - Cast

Brian Manternach : Tenor Brian Manternach, has been heard throughout the country in opera, recitals, and concert work. A native of Iowa, he has made solo appearances with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Black Hills Symphony Orchestra (SD), Dakota Choral Union, Minnesota Center Chorale, and the Notre Dame Chorale and Chamber Orchestra. He holds music degrees from St. John's Univ. (MN) and the Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is currently completing the Doctor of Music degree in Voice Performance and Literature from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He has taught studio voice and related courses at the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University South Bend. He has recently moved to Utah where he maintains a private voice studio. Previous roles include : Johnny in Witness by Zae Munn (premiere),  Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance, Bob in The Threepenny Opera, Tamino in The Magic Flute, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Don Basilio in The Marriage of Figaro, & Ferko in The Gypsy Baron.

Venicia Wilson : Venicia Stolworthy-Wilson began her love for opera in Utah Festivals Opera’s Young Artist Program where she performed for five seasons in over 13 productions during her BMA study at Utah State University.  She received her degree in 2000.  She then went on to receive her Master’s degree in Music at the University of Utah in 2003. She appeared as soloist in the Mozart Mass in C minor. In 1998 she represented Utah as the finalist in the NATSA West Regional Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.  In 2002 and 2003 she took 1st place in the Northern Utah chapter NATS competition.  Roles performed include Margot-The Merry Widow, Madeline-The Face on the Barroom floor, Genevieve- Suor Angelica, Monica- The Medium, First Lady-Die Zauberflote, Alice Ford- The Merry Wives of Windsor and Emma Smith- Joseph, Joseph.

Lynnette Owens : Carnegie Hall’s packed house gave a 10-minute standing ovation and welcoming shouts when Lynnette displayed her virtuosity soloing with the New England Symphony and a 300-voice chorus in Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperae solennes de confessore.  She has thrilled audiences and critics alike with her “velvety, caressing” voice singing with symphony orchestras and opera companies across the country “exhibiting her talent with difficult trills, melismas and ringing high notes.” Her professional operatic performances have included diverse roles such as Lady MacBeth in Verdi’s MacBeth, Nedda in Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Elena in Verdi’s Aroldo, Fortuna in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Alisa in Verdi’s Lucia di Lammermoor, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, Lucy in The Telephone and the musically the demanding role of the Second Niece in Peter Grimes. She has been a featured soloist in numerous operatically based concerts including Utah Symphony’s New Years in Vienna and several of Utah Symphony & Opera’s Singin’ in the Park and Summer Serenade concerts. She has received acclaim for her concert soloist performances including Brahms’ Requiem, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and numerous performances of Handel’s Messiah, singing with organizations such as MidAmerica Productions, the American West Symphony, the Da Camera Choir and Symphony of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the Oratorio Society of Utah and Paradigm Concerts. Gary Sorenson : Baritone, Gary Sorenson, has been seen on stage throughout Northern California, Utah and Rome, Italy. He received his Master’s degree in vocal performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and his BA in music from Weber State University. He is now part of the voice faculty at Weber State University and operates a full-time voice studio from home. In 1998, he was the recipient of the prestigious Presser Scholar national scholarship and in 2001 he received the Outstanding Voice Award for his participation in the New Opera Festival di Roma. His recent stage credits include Giuseppe in The Gondoliers and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte with Utah Light Opera, Morales in Carmen with Sandy City Orchestra and Chorus, Blue Weirdo in Libby Larsen’s new opera Dreaming Blue (part of the Cultural Olympiad), Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Achillas in Giulio Cesare with The New Opera Festival di Roma (Rome, Italy), Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and Escamillo in Carmen with Bayshore Lyric opera (Santa Cruz, CA), Mozart’s Figaro with North Bay Opera (Fairfield, CA) and the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute, Rimbaud in Rossini’s Count Ory with the Conservatory Opera Theater, Ruggiero in Halevy’s La Juive with the Richmond/Berkeley Jewish Music Festival, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte with Westbay Opera (Palo Alto, CA) and Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus with San Jose Lyric Theater.

Janilyn Anderson : Soprano Janilyn Anderson has performed with the Utah Symphony, Utah Lyric Opera Society, Sundance Summer Concert Series, Utah Opera Chorus and Scera Shell. Favorite roles include the Witch in Hansel and Gretel, Damozel in The Blessed Damozel, Despina in Cosi Fan Tutte, Christine in Phantom of the Opera, and Ann Other in Trial by Jury. Ms. Anderson has been a soloist for the Northern Utah Choral Society, Utah Baroque Ensemble, Salt Lake Opera Club and Pleasant Grove Symphony. Janilyn currently sings with three other classically trained sopranos in the professional group “Sing Joy”. A frequent recitalist, Ms. Anderson also has a passion for teaching and choral conducting. She has been an adjunct voice instructor at Utah State University, vocal coach for Mountain View High School, and owns a private vocal studio. Past president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Southern Utah Chapter, Ms. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from BYU.

M. Ryan Taylor : When not writing music, producing or directing, M. Ryan Taylor is usually singing. Before starting on a Master's degree in composition at Brigham Young University, Taylor had already earned a degree in Vocal Performance on full scholarship and sung as a soloist in many BYU productions. While earning his master's degree, and afterwards as a guest soloist, Taylor continued to sing in many operatic and other events at BYU. Comfortable in opera, musicals, soloing with choirs and many other ensembles, Taylor continues to make performing a big part of his career. He has written and recorded three holiday-themed albums for families, been a guest soloist with the Utah Premiere Brass & Timpanogos Chorale, given the Utah premiere of Brian Hulse's All Gold Canyon, participated in the Aaron Copland 100th Birthday Celebration at BYU, and sung the role of King Noah in BYU's production of his own Abinadi. Other operatic roles include: Orgon in Tartuffe by Kirche Mecham, Willard Richards in Joseph! Joseph! by Crawford Gates, Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart & Sir John Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai. Taylor also has a passion for sacred music and has performed as a Bass soloist in the St. John Passion & B Minor Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as been a soloist on Mack Wilberg's Fantasia on Early Latter-day Saint Hymns (All Creatures of Our God and King CD released by Tantara Records).
